Massage Therapy is one of the oldest health care practices known. References to massage are found in Chinese medical texts more than 4,000 years old.
To the ancient Greek and Roman physicians massage was one of the principal means of healing and relieving pain. In the early fifth century BC, Hippocrates the “Father of Medicine” wrote – the physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing (massage). At the beginning of the nineteenth century a Swede by the name of Per Henrik Ling developed what is now known as Swedish massage.
Massage is the manipulating of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using various techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process and promote relaxation and well being.
In the Clinic various Massage services are offered:
- Deep Tissue massage - Is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue. This massage is recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain or sustained physical injury.
- Swedish / Classic massage - Consists of five styles of long, flowing strokes of massage. It is also helpful in reducing pain and joint stiffness.
- Tui na / Shiatsu massage - Is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy / Japanese massage.
Both promote the flow of QI (energy) moving in the meridians and muscles. Both concentrate on stimulation of acupressure points.
