Acupuncture and Remedial Massage Therapy in Melbourne CBD

Recently we have received an enquiry about the use of electroacupuncture, and whether it is applied in our clinic. Yes, patients can receive electroacupuncture treatments in our clinic.

Electroacupuncture, is a combination of traditional acupuncture and modern electronic technology. It is a therapeutic method performed by applying electric current from the electroacupuncture machine through the acupuncture needles to the acupoints. In our clinic we use “Meyer model 501” manufactured in Australia. Advantages of electroacupuncture: electroacupuncture may produce better therapeutic results in some diseases, because the electric current can produce many other physiological and therapeutic effects besides the effects produced by acupuncture alone. The electroacupuncture can give a stimulation over a longer period of time with an electric wave of uniform or varied pattern and a constant or fluctuated intensity, the stimulating intensity can be adjusted at any time.

Biophysical basis of function of electroacupuncture; from the viewpoint of physics, the human body is a complicated conductor with different conductivity in different tissues of the body. For example the conductivity of fatty, bony and nervous tissues is lower than that of the muscle with plentiful blood supply. In addition, the conductivity of different parts of the body at different depth of tissues is also varied….In general, the electric conductivity of the muscle tissue is higher. The deep insertion of a needle may produce stronger needling sensation like soreness, numbness, distension and heaviness and stimulating intensity at the acupoints is higher and the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture at the acupoints is better, because there are many free nerve endings and capillary vessels distributed beneath the acupoints.

Clinical application of electroacupuncture in practice; the following is a list of  some common diseases treated with electroacupuncture:

Facial paralysis, Trigeminal neuralgia, sequelae of Stroke, chronic gastritis, ptosis of stomach, GI neurosis, postoperative abdominal distention, postoperative retention of urine, chronic lumbago, stiff neck, labour induction, prolonged labour, postpartum retention of urine etc.
