Research review into lower back pain

“A new study published in the journal Pain Medicine, finds that massage may provide lasting relief for clients with chronic lower back pain.
The common research design involved treatment with standardised massage sessions…In this new research, therapists were free to design massage programs according to the patients.
The researchers recruited 104 people with persistent back pain who were referred by their doctors to licenced massage therapists. Modalities used by therapists varied ….eg. active isolated stretching, myofacial techniques, trigger point therapy, reflexology, acupressure etc….
Treatment was 10sessions over 12weeks.
After 12 weeks, more than half the patients reported improved outcomes in terms of pain reduction, and a meaningful physical and mental improvement. In addition the improvement still lasted after 24weeks. Several people improved so much that their scores on a standard screening test dropped below the threshold for disability.
While improvement was observed across the board, there were few demographic trends. Adults older than age 49 years had better pain and disability outcomes than younger adults. People with obesity tended to improve, but those gains didn’t last. People taking opioids were two times less likely to experience meaningful changes, compared to those not taking them.
The study has limitation as it doesn’t have a control. However as noted by Prof.Aaron E.Carroll from Indiana University School of Medicine; given the natural course of back pain… the ideal approach is to treat the symptoms and let the body heal. ”

Can Acupuncture help with lower back pain characterised by leg length discrepancy?

Recently published article on the use of Acupuncture point of GB-20 in cases of lower back pain with leg length discrepancy has shown an improvement in lower back pain by restoring leg length equality.
“Correcting leg length discrepancy may improve conditions such as lumbar scoliosis, posture deformation, gait symmetry…..as well as prevent further degeneration and misalignment of the spine. There is a limited evidence available for the use of acupuncture in the leg length discrepancy, however a similar case study of adult degenerative scoliosis characterised by leg length discrepancy treated with acupuncture, found that acupuncture was associated with a reduction of the degree of curvature…. and played an important role in pain management.”

Acupuncture proves effective for chronic pain

“A recent study, Acupuncture for Chronic pain: individual Patient Data Meta-analysis, has provided significant evidence that acupuncture not only provides greater pain relief than both sham and no acupuncture, it also goes above and beyond a placebo effect.
The results come from a meta-analysis of 29high quality studies, looking at 17992 cases of raw individual patient data.
Lead researcher Andrew Vickers and colleagues set out to determine the effect size of acupuncture for back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic headache and shoulder pain. In an interview with ABC’s AM program, Vickers was quoted saying the results showed a large difference between true acupuncture and sham acupuncture and no acupuncture at all, a smaller difference between true and sham acupuncture, but one that is certainly statistically significant. These findings suggest that acupuncture is a clinically significant method of pain relief.” Ref: Vickers A, Cronin A M, Maschino A C, Lewith G, Macpherson….et al.
